Can We Really Recycle Our Way Out of This?

New research by the Circle Economy thinktank reported in the Guardian paints a grim picture: global recycling rates are in decline, even as our appetite for resources continues to grow. In 2024, just 6.9% of the 106 billion tonnes of materials used globally came from recycled sources, a drop for the eighth consecutive year. Despite widespread recycling efforts, we are consuming far more than our planet can sustain, and our current systems can’t keep up. 

Why? Because recycling, while important, is not enough on its own. The amount of new, virgin materials extracted every year has tripled since 1970 and continues to rise. Even if every recyclable item were somehow successfully recycled, which is highly unlikely, the maximum recycling rate would still cap at just 25%. The rest ends up in landfills, incinerators, or worse, in our oceans.

The report’s authors rightly point out that real change requires systemic transformation, a circular economy where materials are reused, repurposed, and regenerated, not discarded. But systemic change doesn’t start in boardrooms. It starts when people – individuals, families, and communities – start making different choices.
