The link between Waste Reduction and Mental Well-being
In collaboration with Take 3 for the Sea, Dr Royce Willis from Southern Cross University recently conducted a study exploring how reducing waste behaviour is linked to mental well-being. Our research looked at the relationship between feeling connected to nature, the personal meaning people attach to waste reduction, and how often they engage in these behaviours. We found some clear and encouraging patterns by comparing Take 3 for the Sea supporters with the general population.
What we discovered
Our findings show that people who feel more connected to nature tend to see their waste reduction efforts as more meaningful and engage in these activities more frequently. We also found that those who participate regularly in waste reduction activities—like litter clean-ups and recycling—report higher levels of mental well-being.
Interestingly, Take 3 for the Sea supporters stood out across the board. They felt a deeper connection to nature and found greater meaning in their waste reduction efforts compared to the general population. They engaged more frequently in actions to reduce waste and reported higher mental well-being.
The role of community in positive behaviour change
The results highlight the power of community engagement in driving meaningful environmental action. Being part of a movement like Take 3 for the Sea is linked to increased waste reduction behaviour and higher mental well-being levels. This suggests that engaging in purposeful environmental behaviour can benefit both the individual and the planet.
Why it matters
This research emphasises that waste reduction goes beyond environmental impact—it’s also about personal growth and connection. By participating in activities like recycling, reducing food waste, and joining clean-up events, people contribute to a cleaner environment, can experience a sense of purpose, and potentially improved mental well-being.
These findings reinforce the importance of encouraging waste reduction efforts and fostering a connection to nature. Supporting organisations like Take 3 for the Sea can play a vital role in promoting environmental sustainability and personal well-being.
Take Action Today
The findings from this research are a reminder that we all have a role to play in reducing waste, both for the planet and for ourselves. Next time you participate in a clean up event or reduce your plastic use, know that your actions are making a difference—not just in the environment, but in your own well-being too.
By fostering a connection to nature, finding purpose in waste reduction, and being part of a movement like Take 3 for the Sea, we can all work towards a healthier planet and a healthier self. It all starts with three easy steps:
- Take 3 pieces of rubbish with you when you leave the beach, waterway… or anywhere
- Take 3 actions to reduce your single-use plastic
- Take 3 people on the journey with you
