7 ways to avoid eating plastic

This year, Earth Day is celebrated under the theme Planet vs. Plastics. Why? Simply put, plastic pollution is wreaking havoc on our planet. 

From the depths of our rivers to the vast expanses of our oceans, and even into the intricate network of our own bloodstreams, plastic has infiltrated nearly every corner of our environment. 

Evidence is mounting that we’re not just surrounded by plastic – we’re consuming it, too. Tiny particles known as microplastics, along with the toxic chemicals they release, are finding their way into our bodies through the air we breathe and the food we eat. 

So, how can we combat this pervasive issue and protect both our planet and ourselves this Earth Day? Here are seven practical tips to help you avoid consuming plastic: 

  1. Limit Red Meat Consumption: Studies reveal that microplastics have been detected in popular proteins like beef and pork. Reducing your intake of red meat can help lower your exposure to these contaminants. 
  2. Eat more for Leafy Vegetables: Evidence suggests that leafy vegetables contain fewer microplastics compared to root vegetables. Incorporating more leafy greens into your diet can be a healthier choice for both you and the planet. 
  3. Avoid Heating Food in Plastic: Microwaving food in plastic wrap or plastic containers can cause microplastics to leach into your food. Whenever possible, opt for glass or ceramic containers for heating food. 
  4. Reduce Household Dust: Did you know that household dust is full of microscopic plastic fibers? Regularly cleaning and dusting your home can help minimise your exposure to these particles. 
  5. Choose Natural Fibers Over Polyester: Polyester is a synthetic material made from plastic. Opt for natural fibers like cotton, wool, or linen to reduce your exposure to plastic 
  6. Say No to Single-Use Plastic Water Bottles: A single plastic water bottle can contain up to 240,000 nanoplastics. Invest in a reusable water bottle to cut down on plastic waste and protect our environment. 
  7. Opt for Nude Toiletries: Toiletries packaged in plastic often contain higher levels of microplastics. Choose unpackaged alternatives like shampoo and soap bars to minimise your plastic consumption.
